Hate having your photograph taken?
‘I hate having my photograph taken’ is one of the moment comment comments our portrait photographers receive when working with clients - whether that’s in a business or personal context. Very few people feel comfortable in front of the camera and so it’s the responsibility of our photographers to put you at your ease and create images that you recognise yourself in and that you feel represent your personal brand or company.
Natural portraits in your own home or office
There are a couple of options available in terms of portrait locations. This blog is going to feature the environmental portrait as opposed to the classic studio portrait taken against a plain background which I’ll cover in another blog post.
What is an environmental portrait?
An environmental portrait is one taken in your home or workplace and is generally a more authentic way to capture a person’s personality and lifestyle within one photograph. Usually more time is spent with the subject. Truly great environmental portrait photographers such as Annie Leibovit, who is known for her dramatic celebrity portraits, might spend even days with a subject before even picking up the camera in order to really understand what makes that person tick and to be able to pull out an aspect of their personality and inner life that might not previously have been photographed before.
“I no longer believe that there is such a thing as objectivity,” she once said. “Everyone has a point of view. Some people call it style, but what we’re really talking about is the guts of a photograph. When you trust your point of view, that’s when you start taking pictures.” Annie Leibovitz
For more inspiration and the stories behind some of Leibovitz’s most famous portraits, her book ‘Portraits 2005-2016 is an fantastic read with beautifully printed plates of some of the world’s most photographed celebrities.
